A reception in a sea faring boat is the last thing one would expect in a state run resort. It’s reason enough to make the Tarkarli resort of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) one of my favourites.

While most MTDC resorts are in prime locations in Maharashtra – right on the beach (in Ganapatiphule, Murud), on a hill top (Mahabaleshwar, Malshej Ghat), beside a lake (Bhandardara) etc, this one has other feathers in its cap too.
The sit outs on bamboo stilts, Konkani hut styled cottages and a long, uninterrupted stretch of beach add up to make this resort an attractive option for a stay in Tarkarli.

However, food is the standard MTDC fare. So, if you stick to basic Maharashtrian or Indian food, you can get by. The restaurant itself is pretty basic and laid out with cane furniture which blends in well with the overall look and feel.

There is a lady right next door to the MTDC resort who runs a restaurant serving local, home cooked food – an option worth taking. You need to give her an hours’ prior notice for breakfast and two hours for lunch. Her prices are much more reasonable than those at the MTDC resort. I was looking for her phone number but seem to have misplaced it. So, if any of you readers visit do post her number in the comments section.

Pathway to the beach
The resort makes for the perfect place to put your feet up and chill. But if you don’t want to do just that, you could opt for para sailing or a joy ride on a horse cart.

MTDC also offers the option of house boats for stay. There are two stationary ones (on land) at the resort itself, luxuriously fitted and more expensive than the Konkani style cottages. Besides, they have houseboats that sail on the backwaters. I haven’t tried this option myself, but it seems like a fun thing to do. Here is a tripadvisor review for you to check out – Click here
