Ageing with the Ganges

Indian holy man by the Ganges river

The Ganges, revered by Hindus as the holiest river, is in a constant state of abuse with industrial pollutants, carcasses, mortal remains,   plastic and other garbage causing its condition to deteriorate eachday. The government and the World Bank”s efforts at cleaning it have yielded patchy results.

In the foreground of this picture are a holy man and a vendor who have been earning their living by the river for several years and in the background is the Ganges with garbage strewn on its banks. Picture taken at Bithoor/Bithur near Kanpur city.
